Hob repair statistics

Archimede engineer repairing a hob

The hob is the sixth most repaired appliance: 38,584 interventions recorded in the Archimede management system from July 2019 to March 2026, accounting for 4.3% of all interventions (906,994 total).

The hob has the most concentrated fault profile after the fridge: "won't start" and "won't turn on" together cover 63% of all requests. It is also the category with the most fragmented brand market — "Other" reaches 24.4%, nearly a quarter of all interventions. Franke leads the ranking, a brand that appears only here and in the oven. All figures come from the activity of service centres that use the proprietary Archimede management system.

Most common faults

63%

"Won't start" (35.6%) and "won't turn on" (27.5%) together cover nearly two interventions in every three. They are the same symptom described differently by the customer. Next come two faults specific to gas hobs: "burners won't light" (9.2%) and "flame won't stay lit" (7.9%).

Worth noting: "burners won't light" and "flame won't stay lit" are faults exclusive to gas hobs — together they account for 17.1%. "Ignition fault" (3.1%) relates to the piezoelectric spark or the ignition electrode on gas models. Engineer guidance: burner won't light, flame won't stay lit, gas smell, induction hob broken, induction hob trips electrics.

Most repaired brands

14.8%

Franke is the most repaired brand — it appears in the rankings only for the hob and the oven. Ariston (11.5%) and Smeg (10.5%) complete the top three. "Other" at 24.4% is the highest of any appliance category: the hob market is extremely fragmented, with dozens of specialist manufacturers.

Worth noting: Samsung (1.2%) and LG are virtually absent — the hob is a market dominated by European manufacturers that specialise in cooking. Alpes (1.4%) is a niche brand that appears only here. Bosch (2.5%) and Siemens (2.6%) together account for 5.1% — well below their combined 7% in the dishwasher (where Bosch alone reaches 16.1%). Electrolux and Rex (same corporate group) cover 10.8%.

Most frequent error codes

The hob has the fewest error codes of any appliance — the numbers are the lowest across all categories analysed. The most frequent, E01 Franke, has just 30 occurrences. The codes are almost exclusively linked to induction hobs, where the display shows diagnostic errors. Gas hobs, which account for the majority of interventions, have no display and the customer invariably describes the symptom.

The E01 code, a generic "won't turn on", appears on four different brands (Franke, Smeg, Ariston, Electrolux). It is not a specific code like the E15 on Bosch dishwashers — rather a general electronics fault. The Electrolux E08 and E09 codes are specific to induction hobs: E08 indicates a sensor problem and E09 an overheating condition.

Fault profiles by brand

Unlike other appliance categories, the brand-level profiles are remarkably similar: "won't start" and "won't turn on" dominate for every brand, with combined percentages between 55% and 67%. This is an appliance where the symptom is almost always the same — "it doesn't work" — and the difference lies in the engineer's diagnosis, not the customer's description.

Worth noting: Electrolux is the only brand where "won't turn on" overtakes "won't start" (27.3% versus 27.2%) — a marginal but telling difference that may reflect a higher proportion of induction models in the Electrolux range, where customers say "won't turn on" (the display is dead) rather than "won't start" (the burner won't fire). Electrolux also has "error code" at 6.0% — triple the average (2.0%), another sign of more induction hobs with displays. Whirlpool has "burners won't light" at 11.9% and "ignition fault" at 6.2% — both above average, suggesting a higher proportion of gas hobs in the Whirlpool range.

Source and methodology

The data covers hob interventions recorded in the proprietary Archimede management system from July 2019 to March 2026 (38,584 interventions out of 906,994 total). These figures do not represent the appliance repair market as a whole, but the activity of service centres that use the software.

Brand distribution reflects commercial market share. A brand with a high number of interventions is a widely sold brand — not necessarily a less reliable one. Fault classification is based on what the engineer records at the time of the intervention.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most common hob fault?

According to data from the Archimede management system (38,584 interventions from 2019 to 2026), "won't start" is the most frequently reported fault at 35.6%, followed by "won't turn on" at 27.5%. Together they cover 63% of all requests — customers contact the service centre because the hob does not work, and the description of the problem is almost always the same.

Which hob brand is repaired the most?

According to Archimede management system data, Franke is the most repaired hob brand at 14.8% of interventions, followed by Ariston (11.5%) and Smeg (10.5%). The hob market is the most fragmented of any appliance category: "Other" covers 24.4% — nearly a quarter of all interventions involve brands below 1%.

Why won't a gas hob keep its flame alight?

"Flame won't stay lit" accounts for 7.9% of hob interventions in the Archimede management system (1,468 cases). The most common causes are a faulty safety thermocouple — the device that shuts off the gas when the flame goes out — or a problem with the electrical ignition. This fault is exclusive to gas hobs; induction hobs do not suffer from it.

An induction hob is showing an error code — what does it mean?

Error codes on hobs are almost exclusively associated with induction models. The most frequent in the Archimede management system are E01 (won't turn on, generic) and E09 Electrolux (overheating). The numbers are extremely low compared with other appliances: the most reported code has 30 occurrences, versus 4,429 for E15 Bosch on dishwashers. Gas hobs have no display and therefore generate no error codes.

How many hobs are repaired?

The Archimede management system has recorded 38,584 hob interventions from July 2019 to March 2026, representing 4.3% of all repair requests. The hob is the sixth most repaired appliance after the washing machine (33%), dishwasher (24.8%), fridge (18.9%), tumble dryer (6.5%) and oven (6.3%).
